BPD Officers Polish Skills on Vehicle Pursuits
The police department’s primary concern in pursuit situations is the protection of
lives, property, and the safety of citizens and officers. The purpose of a motor vehicle pursuit is
the safe apprehension of a suspect in a vehicle that refuses to comply with the law requiring him or
her to stop.
"Vehicle pursuits are one of the most dangerous and controversial items associated
with law enforcement nation wide today," said Officer Abbott. Hence, this week the department is
conducting its mandatory Emergency Vehicle Operation Course. Annually every officer on the Bellevue
Police Department must attend the course per department policy. The annual review of the department
policy makes up a portion of the training session and then officers practice their driving skills on
the course established by certified instructors. The department has a handful of certified instructors
in this area of expertise. This year's training was conducted by Sgt Rybar and Officer Abbott.
Sgt Rybar offered up a Starbucks of choice to the officer with the fastest time
through the course without knocking down any cones. Going into the final day of training, Officer
Sellers has the fastest time in the department.
