Bellevue Police Practice Defensive Tactics
The month of July marks one of the Bellevue Police Department’s defensive tactics
training months. The department prides itself on being well trained in many areas and none are more
important to the individual officer than his or her safety.
At times officers are required to use physical force during encounters with
uncooperative subjects. Such situations can present significant danger of injury to the officer
and/or the subject. Officer safety is a primary concern. There is also a great deal of effort put
into rendering a subject under control with the least amount of force necessary to minimize the risk
of injury to the subject.
The Bellevue Police Department regularly reviews policy and legal issues regarding use of force.
During the month July all officers are receiving scenario based defensive tactics training for one
hour. This type of training is conducted throughout the year. The scenario based training covers
various situations from a routine motorist assist situation to surviving a knife assault.
