SWAT Team Heats Up During Monthly Training
Members of the South Metro SWAT
Team endured the heat of the day on Wednesday, July 18, during their monthly training. "Although
it was hot, we had to take advantage of the house supplied to us for training this month", stated Lt
Elbert. The team made use of a house set to be destroyed by the fire department later this summer.
Elbert added, "Being able to train in an actual structure is an ideal training opportunity especially
when there is no concern for breaking things."
The SWAT Team is composed of over 30 officers from Bellevue, Papillion, LaVista,
Ralston, and Plattsmouth who have regular departmental duties in addition to their SWAT assignment.
SWAT officers constantly train and must be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Each member on the team possesses above average firearms proficiency, physical and
mental fitness, dependability, and discipline. Officers interested in serving in the SWAT Team must
have a minimum of three years experience with the department and be in excellent physical condition.
They must demonstrate high proficiency with department issued firearms and have a good departmental
performance record.
