National Night Out 2007 a Great Success
The citizens of Bellevue celebrated the 24th annual National Night Out against crime
on Tuesday August 7th. The threat of thunderstorms and oppressive humidity could not dampen the
spirits of the participants at the 55 block parties throughout the Bellevue area. Many parties began
between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. and ended at 10:00 p.m. Whether the block party involved a few neighbors
at a single house or several hundred party goers at a city park, the theme was the same. Everyone
understood the importance of crime prevention programs and how citizen participation is critical for
success.
Community Policing Coordinator Glen Truax, accompanied by McGruff the Crime Dog and
Village Inn Restaurant’s mascot Bucky Bear visited numerous parties. "The mascots were a big hit with
the many children," Truax said. Bellevue Chief John Stacey said he looks forward to National Night Out
and the many opportunities to visit citizens. He added, "I love talking with Bellevue residents about
their concerns."
All block party hosts received a block party starter pack. In addition, all block
party hosts were entered into a drawing for valuable donated prizes ranging from a gas barbecue grill
to area retail store gift certificates. The winners will be notified soon.
