Officer Homan Returns from Iraq to Restart his Police Career with BPD
The Bellevue Police Department hired Officer Homan in April of 2006. He completed
training at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Academy in August of the same year but didn’t
begin field training because his National Guard unit was deployed to Iraq.
Homan returned earlier this month after serving a year providing transportation
and convoy security. He expects his year in Iraq will help him be a better police officer.
"Tactically I know I can protect myself and the police officers around me. Because when I got
into some of the stressful situations I didn’t go into ‘condition black’; where you shut down
in a hysterical situation and don’t do anything. That never happened; I was always able to work
my way through a difficult situation," he said. Homan said his vehicle was blown up three times.
A separate explosion took the life of fellow soldier and Bellevue Volunteer
Firefighter William Bailey. KETV meteorologist Chuck McWilliams was in the same platoon and
was Homan’s platoon commander. Bellevue PD’s Lt Elbert stated, "We are very proud of his service
and we are elated he made it home safe." Officer Homan will begin a short orientation program to
re-introduce him to the department prior to his field training.
