BPD Co-Sponsors Child Safety Seat Class
Opportunity To Get Seats Properly Fitted on Saturday
BPD is currently training 27 additional people to become certified in the proper installation
of child safety seats, and is offering citizens the opportunity to get their own child safety seats checked
and properly fitted this Saturday. Most people agree children who ride in vehicles are precious cargo. Kids
deserve to be protected, and the Bellevue Police Department has a long history of supporting child passenger
safety initiatives. The four-day course runs April 23rd through Saturday April 26th. It is co-sponsored
by Sarpy/Cass Department of Health and Wellness - SafeKids and the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.
The students attending the training have backgrounds in law enforcement, public
school transportation, and health services. Five instructors will conduct the four-day rigorous training
program certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Captain Herb Evers of Bellevue Police said "It’s all about keeping child passengers safer
in the metro area." More certified instructors translate to more children who will ride safely. After
the students pass written tests and demonstrate proficiency in seat inspection, they demonstrate their
newly acquired skills by fitting safety seats for citizens. Their first chance to do that will be at the
Shadow Lake Shopping Center on Saturday, April 26, between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The recently
graduated students, and other veteran seat checkers will inspect and install numerous different types of
child safety seats in various vehicles. The Shadow Lake Shopping Center is located at Highway 370 and 72nd Street in Papillion.
