New Radar Trailer arrives for Bellevue Police
The Bellevue Police Department has a new high-tech tool to help make the community safer
- a portable radar trailer. Speeding has long been known to be a major contributor to vehicle property
damage and loss of life. This new trailer was made possible by grant funds from the Nebraska Office of
Highway Safety, the Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation, and AAA Nebraska.
The trailer provides Bellevue motorists real-time information about the posted speed limit
and their current speed. The on-board computer collects information about driver's speeds, the information
is down-loaded and analyzed. It shows the time of day and the speed for all vehicles that approach the
trailer. With this information, the police are able to conduct selective traffic enforcement action where
and when it is needed. Belleuve Police Captain Herb Evers said, "the radar speed trailer has been
proven to not only reduce speeds but will also provide us with information to help us target certain high-speed
areas of the city." Bellevue Police hope the unit will remind people to drive safely.
