It was part training and part competition, six officers from BPD’s motorcycle unit
traveled to Lakewood, Colorado to compete against about 40 other officers from 15 other police
departments in Colorado and Nebraska in the "Blue Knights Top Gun Competition". All but 2 of the officers competed in the Harley Davidson
class, which also included BMW bikes. Two BPD officers finished in the top three. Officer Gray
finished 3rd overall in the Harley Davidson class; Sergeant Larry Lampman finished on top.
Lampman said the training is designed to challenge experienced motorcycle officers
to improve their ability to handle difficult and emergency situations. He humbly added, "It was
an honor to represent the Bellevue Police Department in this training competition and even better
to be successful in the training."
The two day event consisted of one day of grueling training on new and demanding
slow cone courses and one day of competition when the officers are repeatedly scored for both points
and time. It was funded by the Nebraska Office on Highway Safety. The officers who attended the
training will share their new skills with all the motorcycle units to improve their riding ability
and safety. Bellevue’s motor unit is part of the BPD Community Policing Program.
