Jashinske said that ten years ago, he didn’t start out wanting to become sergeant and added, "I just wanted to be the best police officer I could be. As time went on I started developing a desire to become sergeant. Now that I’ve achieved this goal, I can't contemplate anything beyond being the best I can be at this new position." The method to select a sergeant began several months prior. The intense process includes a written test, mock scenarios, an oral review board and in-basket skills assessment, all conducted by the civil service commission. The names of the top three candidates are sent to BPD command. Chief Stacey and the command officers conduct an extensive review of each officers work history. Stacey interviewed each candidate and their supervisors before determining who should be selected for the job. Of his selection to promote Jashinske, Stacey said, "Andy was in a field of several competent and qualified individuals, it was a very close and challenging process but after an intense review of both the background of all individuals and input from staff, he was selected in a very close decision. He brings with him a lot of experience in family crimes and Internet crimes against children." Jashinske’s new responsibilities officially begin February 28th. He will train with BPD commanders and Sergeant Tom Dargy for several weeks before taking over on the night shift on D team, South. Photo: Sergeant Andy Jashinske |
