Purple Heart Medal

The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to an officer who has been wounded by a deadly weapon, likely to cause death or great bodily harm, because of an act of hostility or during an extremely hazardous operation or event.

Officers Grubb and Abbott are the only Bellevue Police officers to be awarded the Purple Heart Medal. Both officers received serious injuries during a hostile incident during August of 2005. Officer Grubb had been struck by a suspect vehicle, dragged by the vehicle and then run over. Officer Abbott was struck and pinned by the same vehicle, suffering severe injuries to his leg. Both officers missed several weeks of duty while recovering from their injuries.
