Shop With A Cop

The Bellevue Police Department is planning its second annual "Shop with a Cop." Through the generosity of the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 15th and Cornhusker, children and their families will be allowed to buy needed clothing and Christmas wish list items. Last year 25 children were allowed to spend $50 each and shop with a uniformed police officer. For the second year, Bellevue officers will identify children for the event. The Bellevue Police Officer’s Association (BPOA) will work with the Bellevue Public Schools and other service organizations to identify those children that may not have a happy Christmas without help. New clothes and toys will help brighten the spirits of the kids and parents who will shop with Bellevue Officers. Last year, Bernadette Stuart, who was a stay at home mother of 6-year old Katilyn and 2-year old Allison, said her husband works long hours and there was not enough left over for Christmas presents. Speaking about "Shop with a Cop," Stuart said "The children wouldn’t have a lot with out it, and they get to meet the police officers who patrol the neighborhood. I think it is a wonderful thing."

Bellevue’s Community Policing Coordinator Glen Truax said "I don’t know how many children we can help this year. That will be decided by those who are more fortunate and have extra money to donate." Make a difference in a child’s life. Please consider supporting this worthwhile program. If your family, friends, or your business can help, please contact the Community Policing Coordinator, Glen Truax, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at 402-637-5852. You can also email the Bellevue Police Department at gtruax@bellevue.net to discuss how you can make a difference.
