The Bellevue Police Department encourages responsible pet ownership. Therefore, this list has been prepared so that you can familiarize yourself with the some of the more common city ordinances which relate to pets.
- All dogs and cats in Bellevue who are over 4 months old must have a license tag and collar at all times when off the premises of the owner. In the absence of a tag, a dog or cat shall be regarded as a stray whenever off its owner's property
- Every dog or cat 4 months of age or older shall be vaccinated against rabies.
- Only three (3) household pets over 6 months of age are allowed in the City of Bellevue. This includes both dogs and cats.
- A dog or cat license is good from January 1 to December 31 of each year. The cost of a license is:
- For each spayed or neutered pet ($ 2.00)
- For each unneutered or unspayed pet ($10.00)
- For spayed or neutered pets belonging to senior citizens (65 or older) (Free)
- For each animal not voluntarily licensed by its owner ($20.00)
- For a special breeding license to a person who harbors, keeps, or maintains more than one pet for breeding purposes ($30.00)
- Pet licenses are available at the Nebraska Humane Society
- All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint and must wear license tags
- Any vicious animal shall be confined by the owner within a building or secure enclosure and securely muzzled or caged whenever off the premises of its owner
- Any unrestrained pet shall be taken by the police, animal control officers or humane officers and impounded in the animal shelter. There is a $5.00 per day kennel fee for each day the animal has been impounded, plus the following impoundment fee:
- $30.00 for the first time any animal licensed to an owner is impounded in a 12 month period
- $60.00 for the second time any animal licensed to an owner is impounded in a 12 month period
- $100.00 for the third and subsequent times any animal licensed to an owner is impounded in a 12 month period.
- All impounded dogs or cats shall be held for a period of not less than five (5) days.
- No person shall own, keep or harbor any dog or cat within the city which by the constant barking, whining, howling, meowing or yowling in an excessive, continuous or untimely fashion, may be declared a public nuisance and impounded by the City of Bellevue.

Call the Nebraska Humane Society at 444-7800. Officers from the Humane Society will be dispatched to check on the animal and will attempt to locate the pet's owner.

Under Bellevue City Ordinance, no owner shall fail to provide his or her animal with sufficient good and wholesome food and water, proper shelter and protection from the weather, veterinary care when needed to prevent suffering, and with humane care and treatment. Also, no person shall beat, cruelly ill-treat, torment, overload or overwork or otherwise abuse an animal nor shall any owner abandon such animal.
