Detective McDaniel was nominated by his supervisor, Sergeant Mark Elbert. Detective McDaniel’s selection was based on his aggressive work and dedication while working in the Criminal Investigations Bureau, as well as his frequent assistance with Uniform Patrol Officers. During the second quarter of 2001, Detective McDaniel cleared 23 cases, making 26 arrests. In April, McDaniel assisted road patrol in processing a rash of vehicle break-ins. He was able to obtain a confession to the crimes from one of the suspects. He also cleared an auto theft case by obtaining the suspect information, obtaining a warrant, and then conducting a live line-up of the suspect for the witnesses to the crime. In May, Detective McDaniel heard a call of a drunk person trying to evade an officer. He proceeded to the area, located the suspect, and boxed in her vehicle until she was arrested. Det McDaniel cleared a case involving the theft of $58,000 from a business by obtaining confessions from the involved employees and arresting them. Also in May, McDaniel cleared an auto theft case, and through further efforts, recovered several other stolen items from other unrelated thefts. Finally, Detective McDaniel cleared a case of an alleged robbery of a local restaurant. From the beginning, he believed the victim was lying about the incident. He found inconsistencies in the victim’s story and convinced her to take a polygraph, which she failed. He then obtained her confession that she had stolen the money herself.
