Officer Gray, Officer of the Third Quarter

The Excellence in Law Enforcement Committee has selected Officer Gray as the officer of the third quarter of 2003. Officer Gray was selected by the committee for his dedication and commitment to his profession as exemplified by several incidents.

While returning home in his personal vehicle after finishing his regular shift, Officer Gray observed three suspicious males outside the Kum & Go at 42nd and Harrison Street. He continued to monitor the suspects as they entered the store. It soon became apparent the suspects were committing an armed robbery. The suspects became aware of Officer Gray’s presence and began fleeing. Officer Gray attempted to apprehend the suspects as they ran to their vehicle and fled. Officer Gray followed the suspects’ vehicle and was able to obtain a license number.

On another occasion during this quarter, Officer Gray, while off-duty in Omaha, observed a person under the influence of narcotics, wandering through traffic. Officer Gray assisted the Omaha Police Department in detaining and arresting the suspect who had begun resisting the officers.

A third incident also occurred while Officer Gray was off-duty. While returning home from an off-duty job, Officer Gray monitored a radio call of a shoplifter fleeing on foot from the Shopko store. On his own accord, Officer Gray proceeded to the area to assist on-duty officers search for the suspect. Gray located the suspect lying in the grass several blocks from the store.

Also during this quarter, Officer Gray recorded the fastest time during the annual fitness testing.
