Detective Miller, Officer of the Fourth Quarter

The Excellence in Law Enforcement Committee has selected Detective Miller as the officer of the fourth quarter of 2005. Det Miller was nominated by his supervisor, Sergeant Steve Hatfield. He was selected by the Committee for his outstanding work on several cases.

In one case, Detective Miller went to great lengths in tracking down a missing juvenile who was suicidal. He eventually tracked her to an apartment complex in Bellevue. He then set up surveillance, positively identified the juvenile, who had changed her appearance, and took her into custody.

On another case involving an alleged 3rd degree sexual assault that did not occur at school, Det Miller identified an incorrect school policy that would have unjustly expelled the suspect from school. Det Miller worked with the school to correct the problem.

On another case during this quarter, Det Miller cleared a sexual assault case with several arrests. He also assisted in the investigation of a break-in to the Bellevue West High School. This resulted in several arrests and recovery of stolen property from the school.

In November 2005, Det Miller was selected by the Catholic Archdiocese to review a sexual assault case in Davenport, Iowa. Det Miller was chosen due to his expertise in the field. Also during November 2005, Det Miller cleared seventeen cases, which was the highest that month for the unit.

In December 2005, he investigated an alleged abuse case that turned out to be a false report by the two children and wife of the suspect. If Det Miller had not thoroughly investigated the report and uncovered the fabrication, the suspect would most likely still be in jail awaiting the felony charges.

In addition to his expertise, the Committee was impressed with Det Miller’s dedication to his work. This includes numerous wake-up calls in the middle of the night from officers seeking his guidance on child neglect issues. Det Miller is not compensated in any manner for these numerous consultations but does it to assist the road patrol and insure proper procedures are followed.

Finally, Det Miller was recognized for the assistance he provided during a training class for new supervisors. As is the norm for Det Miller, he readily agreed to assist in instructing the supervisors on child related incidents.
