Detective McAlpin, Officer of the Third Quarter

The Excellence in Law Enforcement Committee selected Detective McAlpin as officer of the third quarter of 2006. Detective McAlpin had demonstrated performance above and beyond that which is routinely expected. Detective McAlpin was nominated by Sergeant Brazda of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). During the 3rd Quarter, Detective McAlpin recruited several confidential informants. Det McAlpin was able to take the information they provided and build significant cases leading to arrests and federal indictments. The following two cases are examples:

Detective McAlpin was able to use the information provided to investigate and arrest a street level dealer in our area. The arrest of the dealer revealed a source providing larger amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine from a major dealer in the state. Detective McAlpin continued his investigation and wrote a search warrant, which he executed with federal officers. During the search, officers found methamphetamine and tens of thousands of dollars in cash, and subsequently seized the dealer’s automobile. Two individuals were arrested. The U.S. Attorney’s Office agreed to take the case and has indicted the two dealers.

Another case Detective McAlpin was working involved a drug dealer selling firearms. Det McAlpin’s investigation led to the seizure of crack cocaine and a handgun from the dealer. The FBI became interested in the case and will soon be indicting the suspect, who faces 15-20 years in prison for the crime.

Det McAlpin continues to develop good confidential informants. One of his informants has been able to provide information on an unsolved homicide in the Omaha area.

Honorable Mentions
2006 Officer of the Third Quarter

Those officers receiving honorable mention were Detectives Gallo, Miller and Synowiecki.

Detective Gallo was praised for his polygraph work. He was commended for doing 18 polygraphs and still working his cases. The polygraphs are very time consuming. They have resulted in 8 arrests, one employment disqualification, confirmation of two victim’s allegations, and the clearance of one suspect who was accused of sexually assaulting a child. Detective Gallo also cleared the most cases in August for the general crimes unit.

Detectives Miller and Synowiecki were commended for their work on a death call. They went to a residence involving a 2 year-old who was choking and not breathing. Detective Synowiecki interviewed the babysitter and Det Miller went with the child to the hospital. The child died. Detective Synowiecki did an outstanding job of interviewing the babysitter and locking her into a story. Detective Miller did a thorough documentation of the injuries to the child and relayed that back to Detective Synowiecki. They worked together and helped Omaha Police get a confession from the babysitter, who had killed the child.
