Officer Brown, Officer of the Second Quarter
The Excellence in Law Enforcement Committee selected Officer Brown as Officer of the
Second Quarter of 2007. Officer Brown had demonstrated performance above and beyond
that, which is routinely expected. Lt Chuck Clark nominated Brown.
During the 2nd Quarter, Ofc. Brown responded to the domestic violence
call and acted to protect a female from an assault in progress. Officer Brown had
been headed off-duty and the on-coming shift officers were making the response.
Officer Brown responded anyway since he was closest. Before any back-up could
arrive, he could hear the female being strangled inside the trailer. He
attempted entry into the residence to save her and thus drew the suspect
outside away from her. Officer Brown had to fight and subdue the suspect
by himself and did so successfully.
Also during this quarter, Officer Brown was among a group
of officers who received letters of commendation and thanks from LaVista
Police Chief Bob Lausten for their volunteer work setting up a defensive
tactics training area in the basement of the LaVista Police station that
can be used by officers from all Sarpy agencies. Brown is committed to
improving his own defensive tactics skills and assisting and encouraging
other officers to do the same.
Brown is an FTO and has been active training our last
groups of recruits. He serves as a Drug Recognition Exoert and makes DUID
arrests. He is a chemical munition officer for the SWAT team.
He is a competent senior officer that the rest of the shift respects.
He is supportive of his fellow shift officers at work as he handles calls
with them.
Honorable Mentions 2007 Officer of the Second Quarter
Those officers receiving honorable mention were Officers Gray, Meyer, and Reed,
and Detective Jashinske.
Officer Gray was commended for watching a group of protestors
who were protesting at a military funeral in Bellevue. The protestors tactics are
known nation wide for being antagonistic. He was commended for keeping a cool
and professional exterior while being videotaped by members of the group who
ultimately broke a state statute, which ended in their arrest. Since this high
profile arrest that received national attention, the police department has been
inundated with letters and e-mails from all over the United States supporting our
actions and thank us for our courage to stand up to a high profile group that
others avoided confrontation with.
Detective Jashinske was commended for his work with internet crimes
against children. Since his training, he has tried to get the ICAV Team together
to catch on-line predators. The team has only been able to meet once in the last
five months. Jashinske continued to try and get the team together, but nothing
was ever scheduled. The team had a computer lab set up at LaVista PD and that is
where he would have to go, to work on-line. Jashinske decided that he would
like to get a computer lab set up at our department. He met a contact with the
US Attorney’s Office and found out they had a spare computer that they were going
to throw out. Jashinske was able to get the two year-old computer donated to our
office. He wrote up a proposal and then met with the city’s IT department. He
had a new internet connection set up so predators could not trace the computer
to BPD. He did this while maintaining a caseload of 15 cases. This did not
cost the city any money. Jashinske is now on-line in CIB and is sharpening his
skills to set up an on-line operation.
Officer Meyer was commended by officers for his actions
taken at Southgate Apartments during an officer assault. Meyer assisted two
officers who were being assaulted. Due to Meyer’s quick actions, bravery,
and physical skills, the assault was brought to a quick ending with the arrest
of several suspects.
Officer Reed was commended by his supervisor for his dedication
and work in the COPPS Unit. Since Reed has taken over the V.I.P.E.R. Unit he has
recruited several members and has written a policy & procedure manual for the unit.
Reed has also worked several neighborhood complaints and has handled
these on and off duty without tying up patrol resources. Reed’s work with Southgate
management has led to several evictions and the removal of basketball courts at
Southgate, which were a burden to patrol.
