Sergeant Herb Evers, 1988 Officer of the Year

Sergeant Herb Evers was selected as the 1988 Officer of the Year, the first year it was awarded. Sergeant Evers was commended for his personal initiative and hard work in several areas that benefited the department and community.

Sergeant Evers completed training to be certified as an Accident Reconstruction Specialist, the highest level of expertise in the field of accident investigation. Evers recognized the need for our department’s own reconstruction specialist, identified the necessary training, and completed the course work for national certification, which is very technical and difficult. He is our first accident reconstruction specialist. He now serves the department and community investigating accidents involving fatalities, high-dollar losses, and contested circumstances. Additionally, he makes himself available to each and every officer who has questions about accidents they are investigating.

Sergeant Evers is actively involved in our Traffic Safety Program and has authored state grant applications which have enabled us to receive additional training for our officers and new radar equipment. One of his grant proposals was recognized by the Nebraska Highway Safety Commission as the finest and best written grant that they have ever seen.

Sergeant Evers' lieutenant has said that anything with which Evers is connected tends to be on the move and improving. This includes Evers’ supervision of the Field Training Officer program. Evers oversees the officers who train new recruits, and his management of the program is outstanding. He devotes many extra hours to program development, coaching the trainers, and evaluating the recruits.

Sergeant Evers’ duty assignment is uniform patrol sergeant on the midnight team. His lieutenant stated that he has a supervisory style that permits each subordinate to develop to his or her potential. He fosters a work atmosphere that dedicated officers appreciate and respond to. Sergeant Evers leads by example, for even though he is loaded with special program assignments and the supervision of his team, he still maintains above average contacts with the public as a street officer each month.

The professionalism with which Sergeant Evers handles each of his assignments within the police department is an example to all officers, and is evidence of his dedication to his job.
