Home > Awards > Officer of the Year > McDaniel, 2001 Detective McDaniel, 2001 Officer of the YearDetective McDaniel was selected as the 2001 Officer of the Year because of his outstanding accomplishments throughout the year. McDaniel has been selected as Officer of the Quarter for the second quarter of the year and had been awarded honorable mentions in the other three quarters. His supervisors praised his unselfish attitude and willingness to help anyone however he was able. They also noted his willingness to be a team player and the many complicated and difficult cases he cleared during the year. In January, Detective McDaniel took part in the resconstruction of a shooting involving the SWAT team in which a LT was shot at. While several officers were involved in the investigation, it was Detective McDaniel who discovered the missing bullet hole in a ladder outside the home that allowed for the bullet's path to be determined. It was a crucial piece of evidence used in court. Detective McDaniel received a letter of commendation in February for his work that eventually cleared a seven month old abduction case. He was able to get a suspect in a separate case to admit she had falsified reports of an abduction and assault. Because of his initiative and follow through in April, McDaniel conducted a live lineup with a suspect and the witnesses involved in an auto theft case. He had identified the witnesses and then stayed on the case until the suspect was arrested. He had arranged to be notified immediately of the arrest when it happened which allowed him to conduct the lineup in a timely manner. McDaniel knew it was less likely there would be a conviction without the lineup. In October Detective McDaniel went out of his way to help his fellow officers. On a simple shoplifting call, when there were no other officers available, he dropped his heavy workload to help out. In November, McDaniel's good intuition and thorough investigation lead to the clearing of a report of a stolen car. The car hadn't been stolen but had been involved in a hit and run in Omaha. The person reporting the car stolen had been the driver in the hit and run. McDaniel obtained a confession, clearing the stolen car report and a hit and run for OPD. In December, McDaniel's good police work lead to the arrest of two people who had been involved in thefts of cars and thefts from cars at Bryan High School. The arrests also lead to BPD's ability to solve many stolen car cases, a burglary ring and a stolen gun ring.
