From January through July, Officer Miller worked uniformed patrol and demonstrated that he is an exceptional officer. Beginning in August, Officer Miller was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau to work as a detective and to assist the DARE program as an instructor. Officer Miller gave his new assignment the same energy and professionalism that he had given his uniformed patrol duties. He was soon designated the department’s primary child victim crimes detective. Detective Miller has great attitude and hustle with regard to his detective duties. He believes that there is an important job to do for the children and he wants to do it! He is willing to work extra hours to get the job done, sometimes uncompensated. Miller is very results oriented, and has consistently had the most cases completed in CIB each month. Detective Miller has regularly received compliments about his work from the staff at the County Attorney’s Office and Child Protective Services. Detective Miller uses a team approach with CPS investigators when working child victim crimes, whether abuse, neglect, or sexual assaults. This requires a high degree of cooperation and Detective Miller is setting new standards for these joint investigations. He is moving our department to new levels of excellence in this area. The following are some of Officer Miller’s work accomplishments this year. In February, Officer Miller responded to Bellevue East High School to handle a traffic complaint. He identified the young driver causing the problem and called the young man and his parents to the police station a few days later. The matter was resolved and the Chief received a thank you letter from the father who complimented Miller for his professionalism and courteous manner. Later in the month, Officer Miller observed and apprehended a man who was stealing donations from a Goodwill Industries trailer. A Goodwill executive sent the Captain a thank you letter expressing appreciation for Miller’s efforts. The letter stated that this was a very serious matter for a not-for-profit agency that relies on donations to support their community projects. In April, Officer Miller responded with other officers to a robbery in progress at the Younkers Store at Southroads. Miller helped conduct a felony traffic top on the suspect vehicle. Two men were arrested without incident and Miller did all the reports. All officers, including Miller, were commended for their tactics and team work. In May, Officer Miller was dispatched to a residential burglary at 3:44am after the homeowner saw the suspect running from his house. Miller took the initiative to search for the suspect throughout the housing addition. A half hour later, Miller located the suspect hiding in a backyard two blocks away. Miller assisted in the interrogation of the suspect who confessed to the burglary. Miller was commended for his attention to duty and initiative. In June, Officer Miller was commended for his part in the recovery of a stolen pick-up truck and the arrest of the suspects. Also in June, Miller used good investigative techniques to locate and seize several grams of cocaine during a routine traffic stop. In July, Officer Miller attended DARE Officer Training and was certified to instruct the Drug Abuse Resistance Education classes. In August, Officer Miller was transferred from the Uniform Patrol Bureau to the Criminal Investigations Bureau. During this first month in CIB, he cleared seventeen cases, thirteen by arrest. In September, Detective Miller worked a residential burglary on Sarpy Avenue involving $15,000 dollars of damage to the home. He cleared the case with nine arrests.
