Bicycle Unit Training

In 2004, the Bellevue Police Department developed a curriculum for a four day bike patrol training course. This program is designed to provide officers with the unique skills and confidence needed to take on the demands of policing by mountain bike. It has quickly become a success that has generated interest from agencies several states away that are seeking comprehensive bike patrol training.

The course starts with basic bike education and bike handling skills. Students then progress into more advanced mountain bike skills. The third day of the course introduces them to the urban environment where they get a feel for what it is like to be on patrol. The third and fourth days teach police specific maneuvers and how to use the mountain bike during a variety of police contacts. These include traffic stops, contacting persons on foot, conducting surveillance and many other uses. This training was developed for the Bellevue Police Department, and it is now made available to other agencies every spring and fall.

Law enforcement agencies that would like to inquire about attending training with the Bellevue Police Department are encouraged to contact Sergeant Jay Kirwan by email at jkirwan@bellevue.net.
