The Motorcycle Unit Training

Officers who are assigned to the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Unit are required to be police motorcycle operator certified. The initial training consists of an intensive two week school. Ninety-five percent of the training is riding the motorcycle. On average only 75% of the students pass the course. Officers are trained in emergency braking, slow cone patterns, and obstacle negotiation.

After successfully completing the two week course the officers continue with required monthly training. Each April officers are required to re-certify in the skills learned at the two week basic school. Officers who fail to maintain their skills are removed from the motor unit until they show the basic proficiency.
