Duties of a School Resource Officer

The job of the School Resource Officer (SRO) is to maintain a safe school environment. Each of Bellevue's middle and high schools has its own specially trained Bellevue Police Officer assigned to it.

The SRO proactively works to prevent crime in the schools by assessing all possible threats to the safety and well-being of the students. Additionally the SROs teach classes in internet safety, drug abuse and constitutional law. SROs also perform the duties of a G.R.E.A.T. and D.A.R.E. officer.

SROs perform a wide-range of other duties in Bellevue's schools, including:

  • Bullying control
  • Gang resistance education and training
  • Drug awareness resistance education
  • Handling home abuse and neglect issues
  • Deal with difficult parents
  • Conflict intervention among studnet
  • Direct after-school traffic
  • Threat assessment
  • Suicide prevention
  • Train school security personnel
  • Chaperone students on school trips
